Don't worry about it too much. If the 535d was available here, I'd probably would've gotten it and tuned the heck out of it. There are petrol heads who like diesel engines, ya know.
And i like petrol engine more than diesel engines. That's a fact but the sheer data of the 535d can't be niglected also but i don't wana start another discussion again. My respect for the petrol engines from bmw especially the M ones is limitless.

If that's the case, then which one: 535i or 535d? If I want to extract the most hp and torque.
Probably you'' be able to extract more hp from the petrol engine maybe 10-20 bhp more. But from the diesel on the other hand you'll get way more torque. It depends now. The score is very tigh now. The petrol sounds way better and is more fun because it revs more and it's more economical than it's v8 brothers, the diesel will give you better mileage and will spoil you with lots of torque especially from the down-low. I dunno...

I think we see what the re-map guys (like DMS) can come up with for the 335i.

I'm not very technical, but I'm pretty sure the 335i has 2 small turbos, so much less boost than 535d.

The car I am waiting to see is the 335d - (535d technology on the new leightweight engine).

I just wish there could be a manual version 335d / 535d

Look, spanish, who is the Queen :

535d only smells and vibrates ... Ah, no, I forgot the funny steptronic, sorry ..
You are right, it vibrates, it doesn't sound as nice...but on the inside you hear a pretty nice sound in my opinion. Besides, the consumption combined for me is 8.0liters at 100km/h now. And this is also with a heavy foot at times. Try to do this with a 545i, I'd say 12-13 liters @ minimum.

The consumption has become better after tuning. Why? Because the ECU gets optimised also. And I only fill her up with V-power diesel.

The reason why I bought the 535d is because it depreciaties less than a thirsty V8 and remapped my car is minimum as fast or faster (still need to test this, any Dutch volunteers?) than a 545i. Another reason is the immense low end torque (remapped near 700nm according to the dyno, spec sheet says 660nm) and the drivability because of this torque.

Good points

....although consumption and depreciation were never an issue for me ( smoothness, sound and dynamics were) - FYI, normal drive around combined consumption for me has been in the region of 10.5 - 11.5l/100km...not bad. Highway @ 130km, airco on, 7.9l/100km. Don't forget this engine won an award for best engine/efficiency for it's class in 2001 !

Yes and to think that some still call diesel engines tractors...shish !!!
I'm telling you and i'm willing to bet an arm and a leg that the 535d remaped will smoke the 545i. Maybe they will be neck and neck when the 545i get remaped considering the poor hp/torque gains. In fact when i think about it,one shouldn't even bother remaping an NA bmw engine except the M engines, it just doesn't worth it or maybe i think too much in diesel gains when i think about reamaps

Point: I get thet highway consumption of 8-9 liter/100km at speeds of 180 km/h or so and at 200km/h it shows almost 10liters. Talking about bang for the money as they say...

You are right : 545i in Europe is exclusive while 535d very popular .
Yesterday I done 1100km and, going very fast (more over italian limit, 130 kmh), the result is been 13 lt/100km with 4 persons and luggages .
If I gone at 145 stable with cruise control I would have done 10 lt/1
0km .
With vpower 100 octanes .

Correct, and that's because it's the most sensible option.
