Speedracer...I got the same letter too. I have about 18000 miles now (16000 when I took it it for service the last time). I am affraid that if I give them the car that they may do things to it that may decrease the acceleration.....and we wouldn't want that would we?
Also, even though the letter said that they would use a dyno (which I assume would be at Oxnard) the repairs or adjustments may be done by either BMW's Emissions lab in Oxnard or a BMW dealer, and I don't want a BMW dealer to "fix" or mess with my car any more than absolutely necessary. I hate taking the car to a dealer when it's necessary, let alone when it's not.
I remember getting a letter like this for my wife's X5 a few years ago, but we did not go for it then either.

Thanks for your thoughts Rody, and everyone else too. I am having trouble connecting to my scanner, so I can't post the letter for you all. However, since couple of you also got the letter, I feel that the letter may be legit after all.
As Miss525 pointed out, I do feel more secure knowing that my car is safely parked in my garage directly underneath my bedroom. I will decline the offer after all

Do what you want, but they told me BMW has to get at least 4 cars of each engine type in three different climate areas. To comply with EPA emmisions.
They returned my car, full of gas and only put about 200 miles on it. On the otherhand, I think I put 1,200 miles on their car. Nice exchange. But sorry, their loaner pool doesn't have a M5.

I called the Agency responsible for the testing, which is California Environmental Engireering in Santa Ana.
They said that their loaner fleet includes 7, 5 and X series, my pick. I told them to reserve a 7 series for me and I agreed for the testing. I don't know if its gonna be a 745 or 750, but they said the fleet cars are brand new
Looks like I'll be in the 7'er board for a week....

Is California Environmental Engineering (CEE) an agency of the State of California?
California Environmental Engineering is a privately owned independent automotive testing laboratory.
They also say they'll put around 100 miles on the car:

As I said above, it wouldn't be worth it to me.
