dude - i'm glad you got to the bottom of this mp3 cd/dvd malarchy......

i can confirm from experience that the copied or burnt mp3 media does not affect the warranty - infact when i had my M-audio controller replaced recently, the dealer gave me a list of recommended mp3/aac/wma bit rates to help me burn the media with the supported rates ;-)

hate to say this but that lady SA sounds inadequately equipped to handle "difficult" questions ;-)
Thanks Ethan

Yarp.

Hell, even my navigation DVD is a backup copy and it works fine and I've never had any problems with the dealer I've taken it to.
well be careful... I had the same and got a warning from the dealer confirming they will void the warranty of the navigation system if they report a copy DVD. So everytime i take the car to the delaer i remove all cds and DVDs and i also remove the cd changer mag.

An MP3 CD is not a "Copied CD" as you cannot purchase a CD with MP3's. Another thing...it's not illegal to make an MP3 CD (as long as you own the original media).

That SA's full of BS. No way a copied CD can damage your CD player or car. I'm in the music business so
I do know a few things about audio-related issues.

(BTW, I hope the music on there is from your CDs at home and it's just a 'compilation CD'....
Support the artists/music you enjoy or there won't be any more.)

I'm guessing that the CDs/DVDs supplied officially by BMW are of superior quality to all other brands on the market (???) Hence, the built in drive is only "designed" work fault-free with those superior quality ones!

On a more serious note, the M-audio controller that was recently replaced on my e60 apparently had coating from the "official" BMW nav DVD that had peeled off over time and got stuck on the lens rendering the drive unable to read any discs. That said, as I was outside the 5yr warranty I had to pay BMW to replace the drive for a fault caused by their original equipment/part.
