They will if enough people log a complaint with the NHTSA.

Re: the recall, I wonder if that's the cause of so many electrical gremlins that people seem to experience.

Same here.

I've had passenger Seat Sensor errors and my tail lamp just went out. Need to replace the entire taillight. Joy.

Here's the response that I get from BMW. I thought I should share it with you guys!

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding our voluntary recall announcement of certain 2004-2010 model year BMW vehicles. Affected vehicles may experience a loosening of the bolt connection to the positive battery cable in the vehicle trunk.

Affected BMW models include:
2004-10 5 Series Sedan manufactured June 2003 ? December 2009
2006-10 5 Series Sports Wagon manufactured March 2005 ? March 2010
2004-10 6 Series Coupe manufactured September 2003 ? July 2010
2004-10 6 Series Convertible manufactured December 2003 ? July 2010
2006-10 M5 Sedan manufactured July 2005 ? December 2009
2007-10 M6 Coupe manufactured February 2006 ? July 2010
2007-10 M6 Convertible manufactured July 2006 ? July 2010

If the bolted connection becomes loose, then an increase in electrical resistance may be possible. In rare cases, this could cause the cable connection to overheat, which could lead to smoldering of the floor mat that could potentially start a fire in the vehicle trunk area even when the ignition is in the off position.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification letter via First Class mail in April requesting the scheduling of a service appointment with an authorized BMW Center to inspect their vehicle. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the recall has been completed. Drivers who smell burning plastic and/or see smoke in the vehicle?s trunk area should immediately exit the vehicle and call 911. Otherwise, contact BMW Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 to have the vehicle brought to the nearest authorized BMW center.

If you have previously paid for these repairs, you may be eligible for reimbursement under the TREAD Act. Please present copies of your owner notification letter and the previously paid invoice to your local authorized BMW center. They will be able to perform an inspection of the part in question and submit the necessary paperwork to begin the process of potential reimbursement.

BMW remains committed to maintaining the highest level of automotive excellence. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience should your vehicle be affected.

The BMW Customer Relations and Services Department is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Time. You can reach us at 1-800-831-1117.

Sincerely,

Emily Gallagher

About 3 weeks ago i subscribed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)email recall notification alerts via some website. I subscribed free of charge for all the cars i own for the heck of it. I just received this email today regarding the BMW recall.

You are receiving this message because you have requested to be notified if there is a safety recall regarding Vehicles from NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation.

Please click on the following NHTSA Campaign ID links to view the recall information.
NHTSA Campaign ID Number : 12V126
Manufacturer : BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC
Make / Model Years : BMW / 2004-2010
Subject : BATTERY CABLE INSULATED BULKHEAD CONNECTOR

Thank you,

Report Date : March 29, 2012 at 03:29 PM
NHTSA Campaign ID number : 12V126000

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
BMW / 5 SERIES 2004-2009

BMW / 5-SERIES 2010

BMW / 6 SERIES 2004-2010

BMW / M5 2006-2010

BMW / M6 2007-2010

Manufacturer: BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC Mfr's Report Date: MAR 23, 2012
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 12V126000 N/A
NHTSA Action Number: N/A

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLES
Potential Number of Units Affected: 367,682
Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 6-SERIES, MODEL YEAR 2006-2010 M5, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 M6 VEHICLES. THE INSULATED BULKHEAD CONNECTOR FOR THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY ATTACHED TO THE TRUNK FLOOR PANEL, WHICH CAN LEAD TO A LOOSENING OF THE BOLT CONNECTION. AS IT LOOSENS, AN INCREASE IN ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE AT THIS CABLE CONNECTION IS POSSIBLE AND COULD CAUSE THE CABLE CONNECTION TO OVERHEAT.
Consequence:
OVERHEATING COULD LEAD TO A FIRE, EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS NOT IN USE. AS A PRECAUTION, OWNERS ARE ADVISED TO PARK OUTSIDE UNTIL THE REMEDY HAS BEEN MADE.
Remedy:
BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND SECURE THE BATTERY BOLT CABLE CONNECTION AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN APRIL 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND SERVICES AT 1-800-525-7417.
Notes:
CUSTOMERS MAY CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153); OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV

Does anyone have a picture of this battery cable? Is this in the battery well (I don't think so) or in the wheel well?

it says it may have been incorrectly attached to the trunk floor panel so i imagine the only way to look at it would be to remove everything from your trunk?

Ditto the crappy ZF Tranny plastic pans / gasket placed up close and personal right next to the exhaust, and all the leaks anywhere from 30K to 50K miles + Mechatronic sleeve + Sealing Sleeve,(all 3 leak at any time, no warning, so good luck) and if you have a V8 add Valve Cover gaskets left and right banks + timing chain cover gaskets left and right + alternator bracket gasket where engine mount needs to be loosened to replace, that alone is about $2,000 + job even at a Indy mechanic. All of these on the valve cover also leak anywhere from 35K to 50K or less AND we haven't even gotten to the Cylinder coolant pipe gasket which Dealers charge around $7K to fix!!! and about 2K with the spring loaded pipe that some Indies know how to fix. Mine was replaced at just 33K miles! Makes you wonder about the claim "Ultimate Driving Machine" if they are referring to driving a car or driving you insane? Now we find out that our cars may burn up in a fire the same as a Chevy Volt! maybe that would be a good thing and then just collect the insurance?

Can't you just stick a post-it note (or 5) on the steering wheel with "Please don't give my car a courtesy clean, I prefer to do it myself". That's what I do when my car's getting serviced and they feel the need to stick labels on my windshield.
