FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? BMW AG is recalling 1.3 million 5- and 6-series cars from the 2003 to 2010 model years.

The company says that in rare cases a battery cable covering in the trunk was incorrectly installed.

The defect could prevent the car from starting and in extreme cases could lead to a fire. BMW says it knows of no accidents or injuries from the defect.

The company said owners will be notified by letter and that the repair should take about 30 minutes.

The recall affects 290,000 cars in Germany and 1.3 million worldwide.

Damn! I was hoping they finally got around to admitting the transmission sealing sleeve problem was worthy of a recall. One of these days....

I imagine that BMW CA would contact your national car registration company (in the UK we call it DVLA) and find out all the current owners.

"FRANKFURT? BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, is recalling about 1.3 million cars for repair worldwide due to a possible problem with a battery cable cover in the car boot, the carmaker said on Monday.

The recall affects 5- and 6-Series BMWs built between 2003 and 2010, BMW said in a statement."

It would be nice to see a pic of the affected battery cable, and the correct/incorrect installation.

Not sure about BMW Canada, but the BMWUSA.COM website has a portal for the owners to register and create profiles according to the VIN of the cars. This portal will have the owners manual, service manual etc at your fingertips. That way BMW has the name and address of the current vehicle owners. A good way to keep in touch with what's going on with your car!
