I see BMW NA is now saying dealers are having to submit full details as to why the CIP software was updated on a car under warranty, and will only authorize it if it was to fix real problems

That's shouldn't be too hard to come up with some problems that dealer can't duplicate. Like I-drive freezing randomly, Nav suddenly stop giving directions...etc. I am sure people will post what the new CIP will fix and you can cherry pick the problems to report.

Whether or not you should do it is only constrained by your moral directive.

It should not be hard to find a problem you CAN duplicate... because the iDrive software has so many bugs it's insane.

Just lookup the changes.... such as Radio turning on after car start, even if it was off when parked.

Or the Bluetooth ring limiter.

Will BMW try to fix problems that the dealer can't duplicate?

Bottom line - when they come up with a functional, stable CIP providing the features promised (e.g. RDS and MP3 with Pro Nav) in the brochures I think we'll all be happy to avoid going in for updates. Until then........

It's true Microsoft created the operating system (Windows CE) but they did not write the application you see on the screen. That is still BMW.
