My two cents into this discussion; I had the same problem and I have replaced mine with a CF; I got it from E-bay and it comes with double side tape, it's really easy to put it on. The trick about this mod is to remove your current emblem. What I did: with a fine and small screwdriver try to slide it under the emblem to push it away from the airbag carefully, the emblem is secured to the airbag with four folded in aluminum tabs. Once you got the first tab broken the rest will be easier. if any little piece of metal sticking out from the tabs, grab a small cutting pliers and cut it off or with the small screwdriver push it inside the bag. Then c/u the area and apply your new emblem centered. This is how it looks after;

I think it's time to trade it in. Lol. Weird how BMW made it part of the entire airbag system. I think it has to do more with liability than with anything else. They are probably worried that people will start putting their own or after market stuff in there and then sue them when they get their faces all cut up because the emblem did not disintegrate (like theirs does) before it hits your face. I had mine replaced under warranty because of some fading around the edges, so I am sure that they're aware that it also costs them lots of $$$ just to replace the emblem.
I'm glad you said something about your warranty. I was about to order the cover up emblem for my '06's faded one, but now I think I'll check with the dealer since mine is still under warranty. Did they give you any problems with the fix? I asked a guy at the dealership if there was a replacement emblem, and all he mentioned was the $800 fix. There was no mention of the warranty covering it. Hmm.

The new emblem (aftermarket) should be placed on top of the old one. Don't try to remove the one on the steering wheel with a screwdriver or anything. You will make it worse by damaging the cover of the airbag. Trust me.
