And you would think they would have the ability to save your existing settings to a flash drive so we don't have to reconfigure the car every time it gets updated.

BMW E60 CIP Install, Did BMW mess up?
"No - and I'm happy with the reasonable amount of software install time."

mine took only a day.

Sorry EBMCS03, you are right, I should have put that option in. Interestingly, it appears that your car does not have a host of options which clearly seems to aggrevate the process.....

Humm you might be right. I only had the transmission complaint. Wonder if they only uploaded that portion of the software thus making the load much shorter... Eh whatevers... I'll wait for 19 or 20 haha since these (16 17 18) wernt much better anyways.

I think it depend on the dealership...While in for routine service they installed v17.1 without any problems (drop off in the morning pickup at night). This service center is new (Peabody MA). Peabody is out of my way but it?s worth it. I switched from Norwood (witch is about ? of the distance) because they were horrible?I?d rather take my car to a Ford service center.

We are into the 18.x range. My update a couple of weeks ago just said updated to 18, so don't know if that means 18.0 or 18.1.

I beleive it's a matter of dealer competence. I got my upgrade to 18.1 in 4 hours and nothing messed up!

Lets think about who is doing our software installs...If you are going to a newer service center, they may hire techs that are computer savvy. If you service center is older, the techs are trained to install the new software. For those of us in the IT field...that's like training some of your users to install software when needed. Some will do it without problems ...some will try and have problems :'( ...some don't want to touch the computer because it doesn't like them.

The reason why SW installation taking too long is that OBDII serial port is the bottle neck. In 1996, OBDII is required for all cars sold in US. This is 9 years ago, so the slow technology is still there. Also, computer system on car always lag behind PC hardware innovation.
