I always wonder about this part 
Let's say your car gets stolen, but you don't have subscription. Is it legal for BMW not to let the police know where the car is? I would assume they must, if asked. Even if they refuse to do so, would you not be able to renew the subscription at that minute and have them locate the car?

Less hassle in re-newing licencse fees no waiting at the DMV... walk in and walk out all done at AAA. Easy transfering a vehicle to another name... no DMV needed again.

I decided not to renew mine as well.
Used the SOS button all but two times for the first year...once to activate it. The second time to cancel it.

And why bother with the AAA? We all get BMW Roadside Assistance for the 4 yr/50,000 miles, why pay AAA for the same service? But I agree about BMW Assist, let it expire at the end of the first year.
I still prefer AAA...especially when switching from vehicle to vehicle. OnStar is GREAT for directions and suggestions for restaurants, stores, et al - free of charge...but when I needed them in an emergency...took too freakin' long for the tow truck to come. I'm sure if I had called AAA it would have been quicker. As for BMW Assist and the charge per call, I believe, it's unacceptable. OnStar is so much more superior, other manufacturers have purchased the rights from GM to use it.

Well, if you *DO* decide to renew it, I understand that there is a special going on right now to save $20 - $30 if you subscribe for more than 2 years.
When I called to activate the BMW Assist, one of the questions that the operator asked was, "How long do you plan to keep your car?".
I thought to myself, "Why are you asking such a question? It's none of your business!".... And then the operator proceeded to say, "Well, we have a discount special if you decide to purchase BMW Assist for multiple years..."
Ugh.
Here I've just signed up for BMW Assist, and will begin my FREE 1-year subscription. They're already trying to make a quick $$.
Again, if you do decide to renew be sure to ask for the special discount they're offering.
