The BMW Assist program can also provide info on where the car is located, which can be most useful if the car is stolen. When I initially contacted BMW via the SOS button to check the system, they knew that the car (2005 530i) was at my house. A free "LoJack" system, except for the annual renewal fees.

Anybody save money on their insurance by having the built-in "lojack"?? I would think that you'd save a little anyhow.

And why bother with the AAA? We all get BMW Roadside Assistance for the 4 yr/50,000 miles, why pay AAA for the same service? But I agree about BMW Assist, let it expire at the end of the first year.

I always wonder about this part

Let's say your car gets stolen, but you don't have subscription. Is it legal for BMW not to let the police know where the car is? I would assume they must, if asked. Even if they refuse to do so, would you not be able to renew the subscription at that minute and have them locate the car?

Cuz theres other benefits... other cars that dont have Roadside assistance... Free maps!!!! Less hassle in re-newing licencse fees no waiting at the DMV... walk in and walk out all done at AAA. Easy transfering a vehicle to another name... no DMV needed again.

I decided not to renew mine as well.
Used the SOS button all but two times for the first year...once to activate it. The second time to cancel it.

I still prefer AAA...especially when switching from vehicle to vehicle. OnStar is GREAT for directions and suggestions for restaurants, stores, et al - free of charge...but when I needed them in an emergency...took too freakin' long for the tow truck to come. I'm sure if I had called AAA it would have been quicker. As for BMW Assist and the charge per call, I believe, it's unacceptable. OnStar is so much more superior, other manufacturers have purchased the rights from GM to use it.

Unless you use it a lot, I would not renew. Most information is on nav anyway.

Maybe in sunny SoCal, but not here in Louisiana (not sure about my new home state of Texas), you're still going down to the DMV for these things...

Just wondering how many E60 owners in NA opted to purchase BMW Assist after the complementary first year subscription.

I just got my renewal notice in the mail and am wondering if it is worthwhile.

I have never used Assist over the past 11 months and don't know whether it is worth the $200 CDN they are asking for per year.? If I need roadside assistance, I have my cell phone with me in the car.? If I'm in an accident, ditto on the cell.

Other members' experiences and comments would be appreciated.

Never use it and never need to. Not worth it.

Well, if you *DO* decide to renew it, I understand that there is a special going on right now to save $20 - $30 if you subscribe for more than 2 years.

When I called to activate the BMW Assist, one of the questions that the operator asked was, "How long do you plan to keep your car?".

I thought to myself, "Why are you asking such a question? It's none of your business!".... And then the operator proceeded to say, "Well, we have a discount special if you decide to purchase BMW Assist for multiple years..."

Ugh.

Here I've just signed up for BMW Assist, and will begin my FREE 1-year subscription. They're already trying to make a quick $$.

Again, if you do decide to renew be sure to ask for the special discount they're offering.

AAA offers more than roadside assistance. I travel a lot and the AAA rate at hotels more than pays for the annual dues
