I had a feeling it was the plastic based on my experiences with two things.

First, I believe the "special" windshield is simply a normal windshield with one less layer of plastic so the image isn't doubled. No need for any colored layers, etc.

Second, I've seen the same purple reflection on the iDrive screen so the same type of plastic must be used for that too.
