If I rememer correctly (too busy to confirm right now) the daylight sensor is near the rain sensor behind the windshield where the rear-view mirror attaches and the sunlight position sensor is that little thingy that sticks up from the center speaker grille in the dashboard...

Mine are not too sensitive and I even have some problems because sometimes they don't turn on when it is raining. Also in my I drive I have the ''Daylight running Lights'' option

If I select "A" in our car, the xenons and the instrument lights are ON all the time as DRL
This doesn't sound right. Mine only turn on when it is dark outside.

They tend to turn on more easily in winter though because (someone said) the sun is low. Not a good design.

Well if you read carefully, you have your solution to your perception of bad design.

Throw some Gaffa Tape over the sunlight position sensor.

[snip]One thing that's important to understand is that unlike older cars that use only a daylight sensor to determine when to activate the lights, the lights on the E60 are controlled by both a daylight sensor as well as a sunlight position sensor. [snip]

Don't use the automatic much - prefer to turn on the lights manually as required - but it's interesting to know.

It's the only way to turn on adaptive headlights AFAIK.

Wow, I just read Rudy's explanation. That is great info! Indeed, I never expect our beautiful xenons are this advanced. I almost want to put a big sign on the front bumper saying "my car has sunlight position sensor".

..and I seem to recall that the sunlight position sensor affects the force with which heated/cooled air is delivered to the driver & passengers.
