Changing oil is the cheapest form of insurance for a car. I changed the oil on my 2006 530xiT after 1,500 miles and have done it after the break in period on all of my BMWs. Also, with synthetic oils, I like to change my oil every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Again, cheap insurance.

The Mobil Oil study ( 5th post in thread) indicated just to the contrary. The protection that synthetic oils provide appears to increase with mileage. Hence, you may be inviting more wear with frequent oil changes.

Unless you change the filter every 5,000 miles (which may be the best suggestion of all since paper filters are NOT designed to go 15,000 miles), I am not so sure that the study really indicated the contrary to what I suggested -- every 6 months or 6,000 miles, especially since I don't remember ever having to top off my engine oil on any of my BMWs using synthetic oils. To quote the end of the Mobil 1 report whose link you gave:

"Based on the results we've got here, we'd recommend 8,000 miles between oil changes on an engine that uses no oil at all, perhaps 10,000 miles on an engine that uses some oil, and 15,000 miles or beyond with a filter change every 5,000 miles. This, of course, isn't any kind of guarantee, and you must evaluate for yourself what your engine requires. One thing we're pretty sure about though: 3,000-mile intervals is a huge waste of resources."

Usefull info! Maybe it's better to wait a little longer...and at about 10000 km change the filter and then maybe at 15000km change the oil.
I dunno, i'm so mixed up!

I had always taken the view that frequent oil changes were tantamount to pouring the cash down the crapper and were just one of the ways the dealers ensured a constant flow of revenue. That said, I thought that with my 545 I would do the decent thing and do an oil change after break in - on a better safe than sorry basis as others have said here. I went to my dealer and asked them to do it when I was in for some other work - and my SA effectively told me not to bother as the car didn't need it I was pouring my cash down the crapper...... Told me I was fine waiting until the car decided it was time for a change. Fair play to the dealer as I was willing to pay for the change.
