So the brake-in is over, i have 2700km on my car and i think it's probably the best time to change the oil, because of the brake-in reziduals. Anyway tomorrow i'll be on my way to the dealer:
so i should be looking for changing the oil AND the oil filter right?
the question is like this: what kind of oil should i look for? BMW uses Castrol right? so LL1 or smth like that it's the oil i should buy? Mind that i only drive the car all year around except cold winters, when my 4motion passat comes in handy!
So 5w-40 wouldn't it be a low degree oil? 10w or maybe even 20w-60?

Please help me on this matter! It's my first BMW and my first oil change in my bimmer and i'm quite a bit unsure! Thanx

No need t ochange the oil

For the 535d you should use LL04 approved oil

LL04 oils include

Castrol TXT LL04 5W-30
Castrol SLX LL04 0W-30
Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30

Easies is probably to get them from your dealer

No need to change the oil? I heard it's quite benefic to do it after brake-in! I didn't broke-in my car 100% by the book! After 1000km redlining and sudden kick-downs were common.

Of course it's no harm, and of course i don't have to because otherwise bmw would implement that asa a rule! Anyway logicly it's good for the engine. This is the big question: how good is it for the engine?

Changing oil is the cheapest form of insurance for a car. I changed the oil on my 2006 530xiT after 1,500 miles and have done it after the break in period on all of my BMWs. Also, with synthetic oils, I like to change my oil every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Again, cheap insurance.

The Mobil Oil study ( 5th post in thread) indicated just to the contrary. The protection that synthetic oils provide appears to increase with mileage. Hence, you may be inviting more wear with frequent oil changes.

Unless you change the filter every 5,000 miles (which may be the best suggestion of all since paper filters are NOT designed to go 15,000 miles), I am not so sure that the study really indicated the contrary to what I suggested -- every 6 months or 6,000 miles, especially since I don't remember ever having to top off my engine oil on any of my BMWs using synthetic oils. To quote the end of the Mobil 1 report whose link you gave:

"Based on the results we've got here, we'd recommend 8,000 miles between oil changes on an engine that uses no oil at all, perhaps 10,000 miles on an engine that uses some oil, and 15,000 miles or beyond with a filter change every 5,000 miles. This, of course, isn't any kind of guarantee, and you must evaluate for yourself what your engine requires. One thing we're pretty sure about though: 3,000-mile intervals is a huge waste of resources."

Usefull info! Maybe it's better to wait a little longer...and at about 10000 km change the filter and then maybe at 15000km change the oil.
I dunno, i'm so mixed up!
