Interesting. Any other models? My E30 M3 has it in the trunk and my E39s both had it in the trunk.

They did that in the past, because it's the safest place to store it, in case of an accident.
But the newer cars have so many toys that you need to have a better access to the battery.

There is and positive lead is also marked well. It is left in black plastic box (half of size of cigarette box) and it is marked with red +. Earth is to of left side McPhersson, like long hex bolt.

My previous 840 had two batteries in the trunk,one on each side.
