This thread is meaningless. It all depends on how many stop and starts you do on a day to day basis as that is what destroys mileage. You can go the same average speed as someone else but have completely different ways of attaining that.
If you are in stop and go constantly-no matter what car you have you wont see much more than 16 at the most-v8 or I6 will do the same here.
Freeway or less stop and go, the I6 will take the advantage and if you want to "test" your car to see if you are getting the proper mileage-do a freeway drive of 20 miles and you should see 30 plus mpg at 75mph or so.
Also check tire pressure-mine is at 42psi on all 4 tires--make sure yours isnt low that kills things too.
But if you are in D.C area or tristate in that traffic-you wont ever seen more than 16-unless you have an electric car, stopping and starting kills a petrol engine.
I6 may even be worse than a v8 in stop and go because we have no low end torque so we have to have the gas pushed for a longer time to get up to speed than a v8---so never by a 6 banger to save money on gas in traffic-v8s will outperform most times unfortunately. Only if you do all freeway/highway will a 6 give you benefit but even then not by much over the modern V8s.
Really aside from weight savings, not any benefit to buying a 6 cylinder car

42psi for tire pressure - Diamond dont you think you are going to hit a big pot hole in our DC area n hear a bigger sound ?
But yes, I agree with all what you have said above otherwise

Just did a highway trip from NJ to Savannah GA. Mostly highway and some country roads. Averaged 29.7 mpg

The following is from a day trip my wife and I took to Shenandoah National Park a few months ago and includes driving the full 105 mile length of Skyline Drive. I took back roads to SNP but highways most of the way home (75-80 MPH). As you can tell by the average MPH, I was enjoying the mountain twisties quite a bit -- at least as much as traffic permitted. BTW, the departure time shows 9:32pm because I reset the trip computer the night before in the garage just so I wouldn't forget before leaving in the morning.

if you disagree, i would be curious to know how the hell else you think city/highway driving would actually be defined? i think average mph is as accurate and relevant as any method.

took a highway trip over the holidays, got about 29mpg, but let the idrive keep calculating so i could watch my MPH fall in city driving and see what the corresponding MPG would be. right now i'm at 42.7 MPH, 23.7 MPG. at this rate i think 35 MPH would put me about 20 MPG. and i'm really starting to believe that 35 MPH number looks like a good city average and i wouldn't be surprised if BMW used that number to come up with their numbers.

No friggin way.. U must have a 4cyl diesel
No way u can get that results with an automatic gearbox unless your pushing it to 50mph and then starting the engine
Factory specs on highway usage is 6.3/100km and i don't even know anyone who is getting that, best i can do is 6.7l/100km.

600 miles the other day and the car averaged 23.4 MPG with 80-85 mph for the most part
