Just listing some of the variables not here to attack you. As for pumps I think most of us commuters use the same gas stations over and over just out of habit.

Here is something to be aware of for those of you not aware and have poor gas mileage. The alcohol level in the gas you buy will make a large difference in the gas mileage readings. Check the pump you are filling from as many will list the alcohol content. It used to be we were able to get 100% gas but now at least in socal there is no option, and all the gas we get has some sort of alcohol content in it.

This thread is meaningless. It all depends on how many stop and starts you do on a day to day basis as that is what destroys mileage. You can go the same average speed as someone else but have completely different ways of attaining that.

If you are in stop and go constantly-no matter what car you have you wont see much more than 16 at the most-v8 or I6 will do the same here.

Freeway or less stop and go, the I6 will take the advantage and if you want to "test" your car to see if you are getting the proper mileage-do a freeway drive of 20 miles and you should see 30 plus mpg at 75mph or so.

Also check tire pressure-mine is at 42psi on all 4 tires--make sure yours isnt low that kills things too.

But if you are in D.C area or tristate in that traffic-you wont ever seen more than 16-unless you have an electric car, stopping and starting kills a petrol engine.

I6 may even be worse than a v8 in stop and go because we have no low end torque so we have to have the gas pushed for a longer time to get up to speed than a v8---so never by a 6 banger to save money on gas in traffic-v8s will outperform most times unfortunately. Only if you do all freeway/highway will a 6 give you benefit but even then not by much over the modern V8s.

Really aside from weight savings, not any benefit to buying a 6 cylinder car

So what do we come up with here? Earlier models have better fuel mileage? Can we figure mean averages? 6 bangers really do get better fuel mileage over 8s? People with higher MPH get better MPG? That to me means those 60s go for longer runs with fewer stops. Other? Happpy Thanx! Dan
