I took a look at Edmunds TCO function and was frankly a little surprised at the cumulative numbers that I saw there for 5 years of ownership of a 2006 e60 530xi sedan.

Fuel:$10155 - this I can believe considering heavy feet and premium fuel

Maintenance:$8584 - Can this be true??

Repairs:$6724 - I have a hard time believing this!

Can anyone else confirm or deny a similar experience with there e60 Bimmers

 

ok well the first part means that in five years you are paying about $170 in fuel a month, the e60 gets 400 miles in the tank at a cost of $3/gallon with a 17 gal tank for $51 each complete fillup

the maintenance is free so i dont know where they are getting that

Repairs are under the new vehicle warranty so i dont know where they are getting that either

If the 2006 530XI was bought brand new or even slightly used, the only thing that makes any sense is the gas which does add up

 

I agree with PTL, I bought my car in 2007 - it was a 2 year old lease return, since then (more than 2 years later) all I have paid for are gas, tires and mods. That's it, maintenance I have free until 2011, ditto on the warranty ( I got it CPO). So I can;t see where these #'s come from. Certainly I am on the VERY low end of their scale then. Hell, last time I went to the dealer they replaced the WIPER BLADES

 

My thoughts are that they are looking at the the five years starting now on a vehicle from MY2006(that means mid-2005 sale) and projecting costs beyond 2009. That would put the costs outside of the maintenance program and the new car warranty.

So my question is really about the costs outside of warranty period and maintenance period.

 

thats a not a very good projection then because it will vary greatly.

after the warranty is up it will depend on if the car is only serviced at the dealer, in which case the costs will be extremely high. If its serviced at an indy then the costs could potentially be 50% or more lower than that

did you mention how they figure this out and where they pooled their data? sounds faulty to me

 

I tried looking at for their methodology but came up empty.

I agree that it seems excessive but it certainly got me scrambling because other life costs have increased.

you should be solid then, preventative is key though, change your oil and filters and try to find a good indy shop to baby your ride if you have a problem and its not covered by cpo
