Exactly what can I use this for?

Is it simply to play the output from an MP3 player via the cars speakers?

Thanks,

Any audio source. Not only MP3.

Is it just me or is the sound weaker than the sound from a CD? I think so...

It is not just you. There are Resistors that are limiting the sound that comes from your Aux Input. Some member have removed these Resistors and have much improved sound quality. Here is a DIY post regarding the removal. Good Luck.

Pretty amazing mod opportunity with little effort.

I had aux input on my last two E60's. Performed the above mod and can confirm _vast_ improvement. Haven't done in on my new LCI as I use a USB stick directly. Does anybody know if the LCI still lacks "oomph" on aux-in, and if so, is the above mod still applicable? Obviously the aux-in is in a different place but I wonder if it still has the electronics behind it which can/should be removed.

What is the cable or more to the point, the plug specification required?

3.5mm stereo?

I really never noticed a degrade in sound quality from i.e. CD player to Aux input on my 2008 LCI...

Could it be that BMW was aware of the problem and fixed it?

But now I am wondering if I am limiting my quality by not removing the resistors

Yes, 3.5mm stereo. Basically instead of plugging headphones in to whatever audio source, you plug the headphone output straight in to the aux-input. Some people will say you should use "line out" where available, however I prefered headphone out as it means you can adjust the volume. Using line-out into non modified aux-input gives a very quiet and unimpressive sound.
