Aux Audio Input - How Much to Install?

Removing the resistor is a definite must.

You will get much better bass response when you remove it. Leaving it in just gives you all treble.

(Not an argument ... )

Removing resistors and capacitors from any audio circuit will change the volume - it's the nature of the physics. The reason they're inserted in the first place is to restrict signal flow in some manner.

It may not be apparent to some in this or any other situation, but the result exists.
Using the line out instead of the headphone out of the iPod may make it more audible.
