Thumbs down

Hey,

I am wondering how much you guys pay to install the Aux input unit?

I know the hardware itself is around $75, but what about the installation? And what about iDrive configuration (is there any software update, or is it "plug and play"?)

Have anyone tried to install it themselves (DIY)?

Any input is appreciated!

And I did see the installation instruction on the web for it...

I wonder if I can install it myself and have the dealer just program the CIP, or whever needs to be done?

Any ideas?

The installation instructions claim that it should take one hour. My SA/dealer charges 1.5 hours, they charged me total labor a whooping 186USD. I supplied the part.

Check with Gary from Newport, he might give youa better price.

My dealer is offering to install it for 180 including part and labor. Taking my car in on Tuesday to get it done.

Just one caveat regarding the AUX input. Many e60 owners have found that you really have to crank the volume control to get any decent volume out of the system. In the e60, there's no way to raise the level of the AUX input in the I-drive the way there is in the 3-series. If you're playing something in the AUX input, then decide to switch to say, FM, then you have to make sure you drop the volume so you don't blow the speakers. Some have said that you can remove a resistor in the AUX input board, but others say it doesn't help.

apparently there is a resistor that limits the volume. according to some posters here it can be removed but I'm still trying to find out how and whether this can be done DIY without making a mess of my interior.

Removal of the resistor/capacitor circuit "board" does help. While removal does not eliminate the input volume difference, it reduces the disparity.

The real benefit, though, is the big improvement in sound quality. Well worth the 30-minute effort.

For the BMW-audio virgins: the offending "board" is a 3/16" x 1" sliver tucked in-line in the cable at the input end of the Aux Input. It has SMC resistors and capacitors on it. Take it out.

Okay. To prevent the several postings what would otherwise be submitted during the next twenty-four hours and the "use the friggin' search function" responses, look here -

You can also read this [post="http://forums.e60.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=22535&view=findpost&p=24384 1"]http://forums.e60.net/index.php?s=&showtopic=22535&view=findpost&p=24384 1[/post] - for a .pdf of an official geek-schematic diagram.

You do not have to take everything apart. Just loosen/remove the input mount bracket screws, pull about six inches of the cable out, perform the surgery. Replace, attach iPod, scroll to NIN or Linkin Park and turn it up.

The removal of the resistors and capacitors doesn't make any difference to the volume levels. I've got both a connection wire and without in the car and you can't really tell the difference between the two connections.
