I just got back from the dealer and had the sensitivity changed to "very sensitive". I will report later on results

 

Mine did this today..really sunny but lights on, after a 1 hour stop (with car locked) all returned to normal.

I think I've a possessed vehicle!

not enough to winge at the stealer though!

As you can see mine is set to sensitive and I find my lights come on even though the sun is out at times.

I think if the rain sensor is activated and the wipers are on, the lights come on too if set to automatic. This happened on the E46 light/sensor so I guess it would be similar in the E60.

What would the daytime running lights ECE function do? Could it be that mysterious horse shoe ring?

 

I thought about the daytime running lights - horse show ring link too.
I suppose that's the only possible answer left.
