Autogearbox failure ??
Hi all
Driving home Friday evening from stationary at lights....there was a bang and I lost drive in my 2008 520d lci, 165k km.
Car was recovered so today had a look....
When in neutral and park car starts no problem. Keeping foot on brake there is a noise rumbling in D and R.
Put car on axlea stands and took exhaust off and heat shields ..guibo, u joint and driveshaft all look ok. No fluids leaked.
Got wife to start engine with foot brake and handbrake on...again noise in D and R also noticed under car that driveshaft was rotating...despite brakes on.
Can anyone advise / suggest troubleshooting ?? There have been no check errors on display...
Cheers

Hi
Mechanic took a look today...don't think he is that familiar with autobox.
He noticed that the driver side rear drive shaft was out...turning wheel on that side did not rotate propshaft.... but did on passenger side.
With engine started and putting into D or R leads to a grinding noise and gear lever goes back to park.
He thinks the that as one of the driveshaft are out it could be leading to box detecting an error and going to park.
I think it's a coincidental find....
But any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers

Hi
It was jumping into park as I had doors open !!
I was able to rotate driveshaft on nearside that turned propshaft ok, on offside very intermittent rotation of propshaft.
Pulled offside driveshaft....outer CV completely gone.
Started car while on stands able to put in D n R and no nasty grinding noise....so it was the blown CV joint that was grinding...
Now just gotta source a replacement driveshaft.
