Auto leveling vs Adaptive headlights?
I?m the second owner of my E60. I don?t have the original window sticker or clear description of what options the car came equipped with when originally built. I have Bi-XENON headlights with auto-leveling and they work fine. On startup sequence they go up, down, then auto-level somewhere in-between depending on load.
My question is; what?s the difference between auto-leveling versus adaptive? I know adaptive turns left/right based on steering input ? but is it possible I have these and that feature is disabled, malfunctioning, or simply needs to be coded? Or is auto-leveling vs adaptive two completely different features altogether?

Your headlights will only alter the beam angle if left in the auto mode. Try parking up close to a wall and turning the steering wheel with lights on in auto, you should see the beam move. Note also that they don't move in both directions, only in towards the kerb (different depending on whether you're in a LHD or RHD vehicle)

As mentioned earlier, you will need to put your headlights in "Auto" mode. The headlights will turn with the steering input and auto level as necessary. Note, the headlight will only turn to the right (on LHD Models) and not the left if you are parked or stationary to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. So you have both.

I'm really surprised that buyers of pre-owned BMWs* aren't aware this information is readily available.
*Or, for that matter, almost every brand of vehicle sold ..
Oh now I feel silly! Great information - thanks all. I didn't realize this was simply one of those RTFM moments!
I thought I did scourer the owners manual about this subject but clearly I missed the "auto" only switch position mention and coincidentally I never use auto mode.
My stealership did review all the vehicle features with me when I switched over the BMW assist service subscription. Turns after (after investigating following this thread) that the reason it's not listed in the options is because it's a STANDARD feature on the 550i...!
