Auto Headlights

Sorry to keep kicking this horse, but
Went to the dealer, got the settings adjusted for the auto-headlights to be very sensitive.
Now, they go on after a few seconds of darkness and off after a few seconds of light. That's good.
What I've noticed is that they only really work as expected during "9 - 3" type hours. In the early morning and late afternoon, while it's still very bright out, but the sun is not overhead, rather off to the side, they stay on all the time.
So, perhaps the light sensor works in such a way that the light source needs to be relatively high overhead.
Now, I've spent way too much time on this and am moving on.

one more kick for the dead horse, but if you're (is that the right one?
) really interested, do a search because I remember seeing a BMW memo/TIS discussing the problem of when it was still bright, but the sun was low on the horizon (sunrise/sunset), the lights would come on. Can't remember if it was here or RF though, or what if any solution there was.

Mine is not HID. The auto headlight works quite well but not as good as the one on my Toyota Solara which works exactly the way I want. Lights on when going thru tunnel, off when gets out. However, in my E60, if I get off work at about 6pm (still with bright sunlight), headlights are on.
Maybe you can try to note if the headlights are on at around or after 6pm although sunlight still "on"?
