1. Had RFT's as standard, hated them, bad ride, poor adhesion on bends in the wet, car bounced across bumps on bends in all conditions losing contact with the road.

2. Swapped to Goodyear GS D3's non RFT, immediate improvment in ride quality, improvment in wet grip, improvement it stability during cornering in all conditions.

3. Only drop in performance was a less sharp 'turn in'.

4. RTF's are only good for a short distance after a puncture, the higher your car in loaded the less they are good for. if you have a full oad BMW only advises up to 50mph for 20 miles on an RFT! What damn use is that on a cold wet night, where are you going to get the tyre replaced?

5. A skinny spare may look ugly, but at low speed it will take you huindreds of miles and work for days on end.

6. Don't believe everything you read in a mag!

What's a skinny spare cost? Do you need to get tools too?

As an option when buying car they are about ?60, includes jack wheelbrace etc.

As an aftermarket spare around ?100.

Couldn't agree more!

Refering to number 4 it happened to me. Car fully loaded (5 people+the boot full) and the tire resisted only for about 7-8 km and then it started to fall apart.

Concluded that non RFT's compared to RFT's performed worse, lost control in thw wet earlier and took longer to stop. Tested on a 3 series,

Bridgestone won - the testing was at Bridgestones ?30M euro testing ground

No chance that the test track surface fitted the performance charactersitics of the Bridgestone RFT's then?

Any resemblance to real road conditions was purely coincidental !

I have got BF Goodrich 19/245/35 all 4 and they do girp very good, in the wet are good too.

Good non-RFT tyres:

Michelin Pilot Sport 2
Goodyear Eagle F1
Continental ContiSportContact 2

I'm now on my second E60 , in both cases swapped the standard run flats for non run flat tyres.

In normal use, the car is vastly better - even my wife notices the difference from the passenger seat - far better ride, quieter etc etc.

I've had the current car on a couple of track days, one of which was wet, and the handling is exemplary.

Call me a cynic, but what is the possibility that having developed RFT, the tyre manufacturers make it financially advantageous for the car manufacturers to use RFT, leaving the end customer with a tyre that is a) 50-100% more expensive and b ) with a tyre life significantly less that non run flat tyres...win for the tyre company, win for the car company....lose for the end customer.

I've now tried Conti Sport Contact 2, Michelin Pilot Sport 2, Pirelli Pzero Rosso, all good, presonal preference for the Pirelli.
