My left rear has a nail in it (in the tread, not on the side). I'm waiting for my rims to be refinished so want to be able to drive on this RFT for another week or so before I pull the trigger on new tires.

Thoughts?

Yes, many times. I had a patch in one of my RFT tires for over a year before I replaced it.

Can be done as TexaZ3 points out, had it done on my wife's RFT on her X5. All depends on the location of the nail.... As long as the plastic which holds up the tire when air pressure is lost has not been affected, it can be patched...

yeah as long its in the tread not an issue...the tire place should test it for leaks before mounting it on the car.

Yep. You're fine. Some shops may say they don't do it, so just go somewhere else.

First shop told me it couldn't be done. I then searched on-line and found a memo from the manufacturer to dealers which suggested it CAN be done. Just search for a reputable and knowledgeable shop - they will tell you it can be done....

Thanks gents.

I decided to just buy a set of 19 inch Sumitomo HTR Z III to put on my 172s which have been waiting to be put on. Wanted to hold of on spending about $1K on tires + installation but figured I'd just go ahead and do it.

Run flats CAN be patched, I had one patched last year, but the car had NOT been moved with decreased air pressure inside, and it was repaired immediately. So long as the internal sidewall hasn't been utilized, you can patch a run flat tire so long as it isn't on the sidewall etc.

Just did it today. Dealer told me I needed a new tire at $400. Tire dealer pulled out a nail and plugged the hole for a scant $12.50. Drives perfectly.
