Where's the 'like' button?

Now, for the switch, if your multimeter has a beep function and you can prove it works by touching the probes together and hear the beep, it should be no problem getting the NO contact figured out. Maybe if you had a friend over to hold the switch whilst you do the probing? Or maybe try again after a few Wotney's Red Barrel?

Well, I have tried the multimeter beep function on the button - it does nothing and I'ver tried all combinations. I have heard on other forum, that the button itself has to be taken apart and things connected/soldered there in order to make it work. So it's not as straight forward as it seems. I may try it with a Red Barrel (of Gunpowder), will report back !

You have the switch. If you do take it apart, take some pictures. In my world a switch has NO (normally open contacts that 'make' when you press), NC (normally closed contacts that 'make' when the switch is released). Other terminals for lights or indicators.

If this switch has no NO or NC combinations that you can find, you're either doing it wrong or the switch is opto-isolated or Hall. I wouldn't put anything past BMW - they sometimes use very strange technology.

Or you could try it with a good single malt Scotch.

They do indeed use a strange technology - the switch needs to be re-soldered inside for it to make it work (some z4 forum member suggested) as it had 5 lines from which some wires goes to different modules where the "change" or "switch" is taking place so I have ordered a button and M sticker round logo from China - voila!

If it won't work can you please suggest something stronger, I mean more flammable pls?

IIRC when the Z4 switch is pressed, the resistance is around 10kΩ - probably not low enough for the E60 console to register as a button press.

This is what it looks like when it's taken apart

It's similar to the buttons found in video game controllers and such where there's a conductive membrane that causes the resistance to change when pressed.

If this is going in a pre-LCI automatic car, it might make sense to just buy the real trim + button

Granted it's overpriced.
