I drove a little more than 14k miles per year. I used about 345 gallons of fuel per year. That's about 40 MPG. That's exactly double the mileage I'm getting in my 550.
The 550 drinks more.
Let's take into account the cost of engine oil. If you follow BMW's 15000 miles per oil change versus the Prius at 5000 miles per oil change it beats the hell out of the Prius.
It's 0.0006 quarts per mile (9 qts/15000 miles) for the e60 versus 0.00098 (4.9 qts/5000 miles) quarts per mile for the Prius.
Also, the filter housing is re-used and a new paper filter takes its place. The Prius uses a [fscking messy] disposable filter.
(But, the catch is that most folks here say that the 15000 miles between oil changes is the fast way to ruin your engine. So, as long you don't pass the 0.00098 quart per mile BMW wins here.)
There is so much cheap-ass ABS plastic in the Prius that it must take close to a barrel of oil to make it all. Fine, it's recyclable but it's still plastic. However, a cow is a natural product than can be managed in a way to be less environmentally damaging than the current growing methods. While the materials it creates cannot be recycled post production - they can be grown again. BMW has an edge here I think...
The e60 is safer, much more comfortable, and a lot more fun to drive.

I need my car and NO I would not give it up! I could drive something else as I had in the past but I choose not to; I've worked 12-14 hours a day in the past to be where I am at and would not trade or comprimise...my ride is non-negotiable!!! I'm not working now due to economy, but I made sure that I could continue to afford my ride regardless of my professional situation; it feels good to drive around during daytime, streets are not busy, the gym is empty, catching up with old friends at lunch and networking of course...I cannot afford this lifestyle forever; my profession has shut down in the whole country so I need to sit back and wait...PS: I have time to catch up with my posts and ramp up my ####s

I can honestly say I don't need a 5 series but I've always wanted the finer things in life growing up.
of course everyone could manage with a much less expensive car but who doesn't want 5 series!

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
I actually NEED to drive an upscale car. I have driven the cars that take you from point A to point B and I would dread having to go back to one. Since the early 90's my cars have been Porsches, Audi's and BMWs. They don't have to be an E60, but they definitely have to be luxury or near-luxury with great handling, smooth response, fun to drive, and German. No, I cannot live without them and will never go back to lesser cars on my own accord.

Once you go back to something "less" you have an entirely new appreciation for the engineering with our cars.
I also enjoy cars in general, so to have a car I'm not excited about would be a real downer.
