It happened to me yesterday. Turned the car on, the lawyer screen briefly popped up then the screen died before I could even clear the lawyer screen. I've turned the car on and off several times since then, and the screen is totally dead. I can still do things like change between FM radio and Sirius via sterring wheel controls, so it seems that functions are active and it might just be a bad screen that needs replacing. Ah well, I'll be calling to setup an appointment to drop it off and will keep everyone posted if it turns out to be anything really strange.

I haven't had this exact symptom, but occaisionally the "BMW" screen stays up for a long time. This delays the "lawyer screen" and the park assist screen. Sometimes this lasts for 30 seconds or so. Sorry this doesn't help directly, but maybe some others are having similar problems.

Happened to me too. Major inconvenience (I had to wait 12 days for a service visit...no use of ANY I drive features) but you'll get newest progman and another subtle message to Munich/Dingolfing that they need to get hardware/software related issues resolved. Too many failures/issues on a premium machine.

Love my 545i (I am a BMW devotee) , but when comparing the issues my family has with our 2004 Acura MDX fullly loaded NAV etc. the Asians have the germans knocked on high tech electronic integration reliability.

Now, dont get too exicted , I LOVE I-Drive... I just hate dealing with problems.

It happened to me last January : I-drive screen blank, no backlight but commands still operating. It took my dealer 3 weeks to :

1. Diagnose the problem (they first tried to put a new progman )
2. Order a spare part
3. Give me appointment to replace the LCD screen and reprogram the car a second time

Experienced the same problem, screen went dead on me. Everything worked though. Had to use the voice command feature for a couple of weeks. Got the screen replaced under warranty. A new cip upgrade was included.

You could also try to reset and restart the i-drive system. Press volume knob and both eject buttons at the same time.

Actually, it's just the little fluorescent bulb out back that's burned out.

Seriously, I have a similar problem intermittently, except my screen first shows "Electronic Failure" warning, all the gauges zero out, alarms sound, warning icons all light up, and then the screen flickers to dark for about 3 seconds. This has happened randomly and repeatedly about every other day, since delivery. The most it has happened was 8 times in a row--at 80mph. Thankfully the car and radio continue to run fine.

It is going in again this week for another stab at it (20.02 didn't cure it). Of course, they can't get it to replicate while in for service....

Did you try to reboot IDRIVE , pressing at same time [audiomute] + [CD eject] + [DVD eject] for a few seconds?

My Idrive got freezed on the second day of my 535D , and this solved . But i didn't have a blank screen but one of the audio screens but totally dead.

Experienced the same thing that bakersdozen did at 3K miles. Dealer ordered a new screen and installed the next day.

I have a puma case opened for the same problem. However whilst they were fiddling with it the screen came back to life.

Its going in on wednesday to be fully reprogrammed :s
