My 04 545 had active i liked it around town but it broke 6 times, on the highway it felt a bit over asssited

My car is coming in next week with active in Carbon black however i think i want jet black now but whatever is out there does not have active steering.

Is there a huge handling trade off here??

Once again none of my local deals have cars to test drive which makes buying these cars the luck of the draw it kinda stinks this way.

Standard steering has even more assist and feels loose compared to AS. So if the only problem you had with AS is reliability, get AS again. On the other hand, if you are one of those drivers that push their cars to the limit, especially around tight corners, you should skip AS. AS is great 99% of the time but there is always that 1% when it gets confused and can do a lot of damage.

I can tell ya this-took a non-active steering loaner today-was a 328 but nonetheless-and absolutely HATED it. It basically feels like you have no powersteering at slow speeds around town at-40mph type thing and less. At freeway speeds didnt feel any different than active steering which is the whole point. The point of AS was to help make slow city drivint way more pleasent-get active steering

My 2004 545 has active steering, which took some getting used to, especially hard right or left turns, (oversteer) but after a while I had no problem. I did have problems with tires wearing out and a few other issues with the car so I traded it for an 07 550i. My 550 does not have active steering which I have never missed, I know this is a personal taste kinda thing, so I'm not saying anything negitive about it. I will tell you that my 550 with sport is the best car I have ever owned, BMW really got the E60 sorted out, so whatever you decide, you won't have regrets.

Again this is not on a 550 but I dont think that matters but still have my 328 loaner without active steering and I really noticed something I didnt realize was that at high speeds-freeway speeds the steering is actually LOOSER without the AS than with AS. So not only does AS make slow city driving easy by make the steering easy to turn-it also makes turning at high speeds tougher(tighter) than without it-so to me the system is designed perfectly. Maybe its not good for a track-I dont know but my car felt very loose on the road going 100 compared to my 530 with AS-steering wise

530D M Sport with Active Steering, Took my car to BMW Cotswold Hereford (Good dealer!!) for some work and had a loan of 353D Sport without A/S - it was so heavy to steer it around compared to mine. A/S for me no doubt.

Had it on my 2004 530, don't have it on my 550. After 1 month driving, even 1 day driving, I didn't and don't miss it a bit.

Sleepy...

Just coming from another thread where I allready posted something for you... Read the above again, and then tell me if you know what I mean...
How would you react to someone posting this to you?
And what exactly is a beefcake?

Can't you just accept that there are people like 'sol' that don't liek it? He doesn't need to give a reason for it!! He just posted it to let you know that he had it and doesn't miss it. That's it, end of the story. Why are you now giving him sh*t?

Oh, oh, oh, wait: Sounds like you don't care, so DON'T GIVE ME THAT ANSWER!

Iceman,

Thanks. I am trying not to lose sleep over sleepy's comment....and relatively speaking of course, I may be a bit of a beefcake(athletic and fit). I have been a member of this forum for just a few months, however you can easily tell the guys who just don't get out enough. Amusing as well, how it has been written about previously how some members allow the forum to give themselves a greater sense of confidence interacting with others...is that online "beefcake"?

Anyway, Thanks again Iceman...I will read your other topic.
And sleepy, my opinion stands, unphased by your powerful and hurtful remarks......LOL alot

Take it easy guys...enjoy the day and get outside.

All the best
