My Ride: 2006 550 SMG
My friend ordered his new 530 today, fully loaded and he was going to order the SMG. I have the 550 SMG and truely love it. He has driven my car many times and enjoys the SMG. Problem is the salesman discouraged him from getting the SMG in a 530. He said it is most suitable for M cars and the 550. Is he saying this because they have to worry about a canceled order, and then they have a difficult time selling it, or is his concern legit. He ordered the auto instead, but still has time to change if he wants to.

they just discouraged him from smg (s they tried to do in my 550) just because they didn't have any in stock (at least any in the us cause they have to source them back to europe which is more time and lost money for them)

I'd be interested in hearing opinions from the six-cylinder SMG owners (can't think of any by name right now) but is sounds to me like the dealer is acting like a "typical dealer."
Most of them have had to deal with people buying an SMGs and thinking it would work like an automatic (using auto mode, etc.) I think dealers were tired of the uneducated consumer (read: someone who doesn't read these forums) ordering SMG cars and then giving them back. As we've said here many, many times, SMG is not an alternative to an automatic, it's an alternative to a manual...
In your friend's case, if he hasn't already done so, he should read the entire SMG FAQ on this site and all links to other threads in it. Once he's done that, he'll need to make a decision that suits his needs and expectations.

Its the dealer. Theres a few people here on the board with 530i SMG's even the old 225hp engine... not even the 255.
I was discouraged by the dealer ordering a SMG and mines a 545. They're just afraid of it not selling if your friend doesnt buy it.
I say tell him to change the order back to SMG! You get more out of the 530 engine with a SMG than you would a Auto.

hey e60ers! im the guy my friend told you about who got discouraged by the dealer about the SMG. i knew i wanted it fro mthe beginning but by the way he told me "why would you want that?" it made me think of my decision. now i know where to go for the real answers!! thanks guys

My Ride: I have a 2007 Black Sapphire BMW 530i with SMG. It has the auburn interior, has PDC, Sports Package, Premium Package, rear automatic sunshades with manual side sunshades, 35% black tint, Upgraded angeleyes from Angelibrights, and Logic 7 Sound System

i have a 530i smg and i love it. the dealer is just worried about a cancelled order becasue not many people want a 530i smg, get the smg and youll love it, trust me.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
I would guess that with many of us SMG'ers here, we went in to order a SMG car. Before I went to the dealer I knew I was getting it and there was no way to talk me out of it. I agree with RUDY that many people that don't really know what it is would not be happy with it. Those are the "I hate it because its not as smooth shifting as an auto" crowd. Its probably a good thing to discourage some people from SMG and/or the Sport Package.
I have heard so many people saying that they would not buy a BMW again because its horrible in the snow. Invariably they had ordered the Sports Package but never really realized that it was by their selection that their car sucks in the snow.
By-the By: Just changed my rear tires because it was time and I had a slow leak in one tire. The slow leak turned out to be a cracked rim. Can't really complain because I knew the SP wheels are much more likely to crack under normal driving conditions.
