the markers are pretty OK to give you an idea of engine temp, but since I installed the M5 cluster I noticed I used to get on the gas too early if I go by the markers as a reference.
The oil temp is the best gauge to let you know when to have fun. This is about 10 mins on the V8 to get to 100deg C.
