Default Another tyre pressure question!

Hi folks

I'm new to the forums but have lurked for a long time.

I am currently driving an E60 520D automatic.

I previously had RFT tyres on it but replaced them shortly after getting the car so right now I am running on 225/50/17 98W XL Sava Intensa UHPs on all 4 tyres.

I was never particularly sure that the pressures I was using were correct with the change to non-rft so I thought I would ask advice on what would be the correct pressure to use?

Right now I am using what is on the pillar namely, 29F and 35R but I find the ride a little harsh. Also I find it a little shaky but I suspect that is possibly a suspension issue. I am hoping to get better pressures to mitigate the shake a little whilst I save the cash to get it repaired.

After reading a lot of threads there seems to be mixed opinions. Many suggest 35 all around with others suggesting as high as 40 for the rears

What is the common consensus now? Max load on the tyres is 750kg @ 50 psi and I have read others suggesting about 12 psi below max being ideal so around 38 all around

Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!

I think you're not going to get a consensus on this. The pillar readouts are a start, but I think everyone has their preferences. Higher pressures give a harsher ride but better gas mileage. After you have your suspension looked at, my advice would be to experiment with various pressures to see what you're comfortable with and go with that.

Go with the door pillar markings. Changing over to normal tires from run flats should be softer right off. Not sure why.

Thanks guys.

I am experimenting at the moment. I increased the pressure to 32f and 38r to see how it felt. Whilst I like the easier take off and lighter steering it is a little more harsh alright.

I think I might go back to pillar pressures until I get the wheels looked at as I suspect any experimenting now will give me results that will change when it is fixed

On the shaking, I find it happens through the floor near the pedals (but not in the seat). Any ideas? Would it worthwhile getting them balanced and aligned first before going to a mechanic to check suspension?

Could be a lot of things. Motor mounts, control arm bushings, guibo.

I would put 32-36psi to know what pressure will give the most comfortable ride.

When I switched away from run flats , I was not happy with the feel of non run flat tires
The side wall roll on cornering and evasive lane switching in upper speeds was horrible . Felt like I was ridding on squishy balloons .

I was used to the harder side wall feel due to the thicker material on run flats . They are a superior tire in higher speed manuvering . As the stiffer side wall gives a more stable feeling whipping the car at those speeds .

Raising the tire pressure helped a great deal on reducing side wall roll . It's not quite as solid and stable as run flats , but it helped tremendously .
