My 525d has had a CIP20 upgrade recently, and on a cold day as I turn the ingnition on the iDrive display quickly shows the message "wait for pre-heat" or something like it. Didnt notice this before the software update.

Diesels dont' have classic sparks they have glow plugs (heater element) and those have to preheat during extreme low conditons before "lighting up" the engine...
most modern diesels have automatic preheat... but I remember just very few years ago on my VW Tdi there was an orange icon in the instrument cluster which you had to wait for to go blank to fully crank the ignition from position 1

Diesels dont' have classic sparks they have glow plugs (heater element) and those have to preheat during extreme low conditons before "lighting up" the engine...
most modern diesels have automatic preheat... but I remember just very few years ago on my VW Tdi there was an orange icon in the instrument cluster which you had to wait for to go blank to fully crank the ignition from position 1

It's a message for those of you with diesels which need a warm-up period prior to ignition.

No is "homelink", the i-Drive now knows your wife is cooking and reminding you to pre-heat the oven.
