Are there any other issues with the instrument panel ... other warning indicators that don't seem to light properly? Some back lit instrument panel bulbs are replaceable but I'm personally not sure if ours are LEDs. There have been forum posters who have changed out the orange/red lighting with white lights ... maybe one of them will chime in.

old battery? the car adjusts the voltage delivered to many components and lowers the output of some as the battery ages. I noticed before I replaced my 6 year old battery that all the screens would dim to where I could hardly see them ocassionaly. New battery and no more problems.

My dad's old E39 had a similar issue with pixels dying (still backlit but no text), replaced the battery and they came back.
