I prefer Aluminum to wood. I think some wood trims look much better than others, but overall I would take any of the Aluminum trims (ALU Shadow brushed, ALU Feinschliff brushed, ALU Cube, etc.) over any of the woods. I ordered Anthracite Maple wood trim for my car because BMW NA would not let me order anything but dark Poplar Wood and Anthracite wood. I lived with it for a year and then replaced it with the ALU Shadow brushed trim.

As far as I'm concerned the wood trims fall into two categories (these are my opinions, so don't get mad. I didn't get mad when you guys called my ALU trim "awful", "cheap looking", and "loud" ):

Catagory 1: These are wood trims that look good but I just would not have them in my car because I think the more modern Aluminum trims match my personality better. The Anthracite, Bamboo, and BMW Individual trims fall into these category. The matte wood trim on the E65 also looks good and falls into this category (I can't remember what it's called....Cherry??).

Category 2: These are the ones that IMO really do look bad. I wouldn't be caught dead with these trims in my car, and don't like them when I see them in other's cars. These are usually the burly mid to dark brown woods. They look too much like trims found in Jags, MB's, etc. I think the dark Poplar wood trim on the E60 is a prime example of this. I can't understand why BMW came up with this trim in the first place, they have so many other nicer wood trims that they could have used instead of the dark Poplar. There are many people who like this trim, but I think had BMW used some of the trims that they use on other models it would have looked better.

I would even pick the painted plastic trims over that hideous Dark Poplar stuff.

Again, these are just my opinions, so if you have the Poplar trim......no offense intended.

Fake plastic or real plastic?

ABC

You are so cynical, BMW use only the best quality materials................it says so in the brochure.

So nothing less than 100% genuine fake plastic could possibly be used!

An escalation of epithets, eh?

It's down to choice.

Remember that this forum (like all enthusiasts who have the access to the WWW and "can be bothered") has a skewed e60 owner profile and in no way represents the "average" e60 owner.

Having said that, it is interesting to note from the poll that the jury is out and after all its only "opinions".

So, IMHO (as mentioned in an earlier post) if you are driven by a leather choice then there are some trim combos (and remember the US market doesn't get them all) which look inappropriate. It's down to taste. YMMV.

Aluminium for me
Wood is for Lexus & MB folks, those looking for luxury & comfort above anything.

BMW is a SPORT Brand and Alum suits it best in MY opinion.

I accept wood trim in the right combo, but prefer aluminium myself. And I'm so relieved that BMW understood the the horrific Alu Cube that came with the M-sport pkg needed to go in favour if the brushed aluminium!

I visit the dealer's VIP show yesterday and on of the cars the presented was a E61 525d M in spacegrey. The brushed alu really make the car look sport but still restrained/classic in a typical german way...

Just having some fun while expressing my opinions. We all have different tastes and opinons and we should all be able to express them. We should at least be happy that BMW offers so many trims to choose from (if you're not in the US), most other companies will offer one trim whether you like it or not. There are more than a dozen trims offered on the E60 if you count all the different wood, metal, plastic, and Individual trims.

I can't speak for all the different ALU trims, but the one I installed in my car is the brushed ALU Shadow and it has a thick (relatively speaking) layer of aluminum bonded to a thicker plastic backing. So the alu itself is not flimsy and the with the addition of the plastic backing it will not ding or dent very easily. I have had it in my car for a year or more now, and there is not a single ding, dent or scratch on it. As a matter of fact the Anthracite wood trim that I had in my car before swithching over to the ALU was more prone to scuffs and hairline scratches in the clear coat than the aluminum.

As I said, I can only speak from first hand experience on the ALU Shadow brushed trim, but if the other E60 aluminum trims are constructed the same way with the same thickness metal and the full plastic backing then they should be pretty resistant to dings and dents too.
