I'm currently at 99,700 miles...I figure I'll hit 100K in the next few days and I'm a bit nervous since my extended warranty/maintenance will expire. I had my last official service completed last week, I-drive showed I needed new spark plugs and the dealership surprisingly replaced my brakes under a PUMA case. They did recommend replacing "lower control arm bushings" but said it was not covered under extended warranty or maintenance and wanted to charge me $550. I wanted to argue it but I figured they replaced my brakes so whatever. (By the way, anyone in the LA area, I recommend Tony at Century West for service. I purchased my car at Bob Smith and they are the absolute worst dealership).

Has anyone else replaced their lower control arm bushings under warranty or service maintenance? I don't really know what they do for the car, but I know it's related to the steering/handling...I'm wondering if I should try and have it covered under warranty before I hit 100K. Any thoughts?

I have 67,000 miles on mine. I think you should consider selling. An oil change and micro filter (known as an air filter to the rest of the automotive world) is $500 at South Bay BMW. A brake job is $700 per axle. I don't want to imagine what the Idrive, steering column, engine or tranny most cost. It looks to me like bushings would not be covered under maintenance or warranty as those are wear and tear items specifically excluded from coverage. You can ask to see a copy of the maintenance program from the dealer.

I'm sorry to have to inform you, but your car is going to disintegrate at 100,753.

... actually a microfilter and an airfilter are two different things. The microfilter deals with filtering of cabin air and is quite a bit more expensive than an engine air filter. I am not sure where it is on the E60, but my E36 requires dismanting the glove box and removing to replace. My old E38 had two on the underside of the hood. They are quite expensive unfortunately. But, not that hard to do yourself with some patience. Fred

there's two microfilters on our e60s, under the hood, one on the driver's side and one on the passenger's side. i wish i could post a picture and photoshop or something to point it out if that would help. they are located above the engine, below the windshield wipers, underneath those two black plastic panels that stick up behind the strut bar and the rubber lining. and the ecu is located under the passenger side micro. hope this helps. sorry im not that good in describing. i was looking at this thread to help me describe the location, mainly post #13 http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=...p;hl=engine+bay

... sounds like the same location as my old E38 (740I) which should be simple to change for the previous posters that had cost concerns. Out of warranty I tend to try to do as much basic work as possible. Still got 73 k to go on my cpo 530.

Control arm bushing failure is a very common problem on e39s and looking at my e60 the suspension wishbone is pretty similar. It's not uncommon for a control arm bushing to fail at 40k-60k on a e39. I wouldn't be surprised if the rubber bushings in the e60 lasted any longer.

$550 is a pretty good price if new arms are included. If they are just pressing out the old ones and pressing in new ones, go to an indy and get the whole arm replaced.

Just sell the car. Trust me you don't want to keep any european car past the warranties. You will pay an arm and a leg for repairs and maintenance.

Does that apply to Japanese cars too?

Or is it just higher end cars in general?
