I'm bringing my drill over to polepositions house tomorrow and will try this. I'll let you guys know the results. If he doesn't show at the meet on Sunday, we'll know it worked.

The OEM alarm siren consist of a siren, a tilt-sensor and a backup-battery. It should in other words go off if the battery is disconnected, but I think it will only make noise for about 30 seconds.

Alarms go off all the time in NYC, most people just ignore them.

+1, however, the poster stated that the families were at home. I would never ignore my own alarm, if I hear it. The most likely scenario is that these were pros. From what I hear, pros have scanners that can read the alarm code, out of possible billions, and can disable the alarm that way. I guess no car is safe from determined pros. After getting over the initial shock, as a consolation, I guess the best thing is that you can get a new car with the insurance money and don't have to justify your new purchase to a spouse or S/O.

Its amazing - these vehicles have freakin tilt, motion and battery sensors and they can STILL get to them?? What about BMW NAs Assist? They're sposed to be able to track them down even if they do get jacked...

Two of my friends have had their BMWs stolen from their driveways -a 2006 535 and a 2007 X5. In both cases no alarm was heard - family in the home. Is it possible to turn off the theft alarm? Do sophistocated thieves have some electronic way to first turn off the alarm then steal the car? Can anyone explain this?

2006 535 .. that doesnt make sence... but i can tell you that my car was stolen tursday morning no alarm no nothing...

Neither car has turned up yet. Call me naive but I would think at least one of the two car's sophistocated BMW alarm systems would have gone off. I wonder how this is pulled off and both cars, more than 2 months later, still not found. I stopped leaving my '08 AW 535xi in my drive. The one was not a 2006 535 but rather a 2006 5er.

My '89 E30's anti-theft system had a battery backup that allowed it to go off even if the battery was dead. I'm not sure about the E60 -- does anyone know for sure?
On my '99 540i/6 when I disconnected the battery once it set the alarm off... Not sure about the E60 -- would think that it'd have that feature too.
