I'm not too sure, but I will get the battery checked tomorrow. I left it disconnected for no more than 5 minutes.

So, the Intelligence (IBS) wire connects to the negative battery cable? I only disconnected the negative terminal...still can't believe the lights turned on..I'm positive that I didn't unplug a wire, checked this morning even charged the battery..no luck

Give stats of your car because I don't know what year you have. Years and options differ.
Did you check the steering fluid? Could be low. Pick up at local NAPA store if in need.

Is your alignment ok?
Check the date on the battery.
Check the voltage of battery, should be about 12.6 volts.
Check alternator to make sure it is putting out 14v.
It sounds like your initial problem was that your fluid was low,
I took my IBS many moons ago. If you have a 2008..it's a different story.

It's an 04 545i with the sport package, Only 62k miles on it. I'm not really worried about the active steering anymore, I'm worried about the airbag because both seat belt and airbag light is on in the cluster. The idrive is saying there is a fault in the passenger airbag. The airbag light was never on, but when I disconnected the negative battery cable and reconnected...the lights came on.

Also, I already had the recall fixed earlier this year which was the passenger floor mat for the airbag!

If you had a recall issue, they should be able to clear it or fix it etc.
Airbag or seatbelt are probably tied together. I doubt this will happen if you disco the battery and put it back brother. ONLY if you have something unplugged while battery is connected. So it may just work itself out. In the meantime focus on the initial issue and just check your fluid level for your active steering and make sure your alignment is good. The others may work themselves out when your car checks itself.

I had the airbag warning and lights come on first about a year ago and the dealer diagnosed it as a bad IBS sensor and battery cable - quoted around $600 I think. I said no thanks and they just reset the errors. About 8 months later when my starter went out, before I figured out what it was, I disconnected the battery and the moment I reconnected it, I hear the dreaded 'ding' and the errors were back. Lived with it for a couple of months and finally bought the cable and software off eBay and reset it using INPA. About a month later now, the errors haven't returned although INPA shows a 'IBS Plausibility' error - but no warnings/lights are triggered. The previous owner also put it a non-OEM battery which may be contributing to things.
