Is Active Steering worth paying for?

Yes yes yes! I came off a 3er w/out active steering, and I thought I was going to get carpal tunnel! Will never buy another BMW w/out active steering. It gives you the extra boost you need at low speeds, but still plenty of that signature bmw feel at higher speeds.

Hey guys! I am actually a new member. I love my 2001 530i and I am planning to replace it with a 2009 530i. When I was reading the brochure there was something called active steering. I have done some research and I read in a magazine they said it was annoying. Should I get this feature or not? ![Cool](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif)

I've never once encountered issues with AS driving agressively.

As long as you do not drive too agressively AS is great, for very agressive driving cocvenience gives up to predictability. I would gladly get faster/shorter ratio steering but would think twise before getting AS.

Ok, well first of all if you're going to be doing "racing" in your 5er, you're going to be deactivating your DSC/DTC, which as far as I know can be set up to deactivate active steering as well. Regardless, for 99% of non-m5 5er drivers AS performance under full racing conditions is completely irrelevant.
Additionally, having cruised 140+ mph on the Autobahn more than a couple of times, and having to avoid morons cutting me off, the Active Steering performed admirably. If anything AS has saved my ass. At high speeds the only thing AS really does is help correct stupidity on the part of the driver.

If you do something really stupid like 140mph on a public highway and the situation suddenly changes (some one doing 60-70mph blocks your lane) you need to be very quick and very precise, slowing down from 140mph to 80-85mph and doing a couple of avoidance maneuvers at the same time. Any delays or unexpected change of steering ratio can kill you. Read what race drivers say about ARS on E60. We all love ARS but for race conditions ARS is too slow, it confuses drivers and they do not feel comfortable. Same can be said about AS.
