Hey guys! I am actually a new member. I love my 2001 530i and I am planning to replace it with a 2009 530i. When I was reading the brochure there was something called active steering. I have done some research and I read in a magazine they said it was annoying. Should I get this feature or not?
Get it! I spend equal time in a 2005 545i sports edition and a 1994 318i convertible. I drive on clear open expressways and in block to block downtown rush hour traffic. I've found that although the 545i feels heavier than the 318i, it turns much better and feels easier to maneuver on the highway and in the city. The 545i steering has a relatively light to the touch feel compared to the 318i power steering (where I often find myself tightly gripping the steering wheel just to control the car). Sometimes, if I drive the 318i for four days in a row then jump in the 545i, the 545i feels a little squirrelly (like the car is turning too fast). But after four or five consecutive days in the 545i, the 318i feels like a little tank.

Any option that makes your BMW a better driving machine is what it's all about.

I do not have AS in my 550 and, while the steering is precise, it's quite heavy especially given the small diameter steering wheel. So when you don't have AS on an E60, you never doubt that you're driving a heavy car.

You'll never go back ... I love the fact that turning into a side street requires only a quarter turn of the steering wheel ... how lazy I am!!!

I had the pleasure of driving a 320d WITHOUT active steering for a day ... I missed AS terribly.

I also drove my friend's new Camry (the unashamedly BMW styled cheap Jap crap) for a day and absolutely wrestled my way around town.

Get Active Steering. It shouldn't even be an option!!!

Completely agree with the others, AS is great, it makes the car feel nimble, agile and fun....

As long as you do not drive too agressively AS is great, for very agressive driving cocvenience gives up to predictability. I would gladly get faster/shorter ratio steering but would think twise before getting AS.

I've always marveled at how it anticipates my moves. Brilliant.

Me too. I do drive aggressively and love the twisties so I wonder if I'd like it.

You will love it, but don't believe the myths:

Firstly, it doesn't anticipate your driving style. It is a REACTIVE system that is speed dependant. At high speed you won't notice A/S at all. Driving around town and parking you'll really appreciate it. A quarter-turn of the wheel is all that is needed to pull out of the driveway.

Secondly, it doesn't take ages to get used to. Five minutes, tops, for any good driver. Are you a good driver? Just take it easy making kerb-side turns for a few minutes and you'll be fine.

Finally, you still "feel" the road as well as almost any other power steering assisted system.

Good luck.
