I remember reading complaints about AS in the wind awhile back. When the opportunity arose, I drove on the highway with some gusty wind to see if I could notice anything. I tried to find how AS would correct for me and whatnot, but I found nothing.
In heavy wind, I found that the car drove like any other. In gusty wind, the car would move around and you would have to make a conscious effort to keep the car in your lane. But I find this happens with any car under these conditions.
Overall, I'd still opt not to have AS in the car though.

I have to agree here- I drove my new E60 from LA to Phoenix this past weekend, and what I noticed was how WELL it drove with a strong wind, better than my E39. FWIW I seem to have a "newer" version of AS, much better than dealer cars I test drove 2-3 months previously.

With AS, wind hits the car, AS corrects, you correct (by instinct) and the two together are creating overcorrection. Is it me? Could be, but I still think all things considered, I'd end up with a straighter line on the road if I could turn it off in very windy conditions.

I drove my Lexus (no AS) through 80mph wind gusts a few months ago and rarely had to "correct" the steering (even when hit from the sides). A 4000lb car going 80mph has a lot of momentum, so it takes a very strong gust of wind to change its trajectory. Lexus' version of active steering in the new GS also corrects for wind gusts.
Perhaps you should try to relax in the wind, instead of trying to anticipate corrections....

The e60 is fairly big and fairly light for a sedan. These 2 things make it a bit more difficult in high winds than other cars. I came from a 300ZX which weighed a few hundred pounds less but the side of the car was perhaps 1/2 the size of an e60. That car was great in the wind.
I also drove a VW Vanagon cross country once. That was scary, even at 55 mph because it weighed less than 3000 pounds but was very tall. It was like a sail pushing the thing into the other lane.
I do think you need to learn not to correct with AS which was fine for me since me last car didn't move at all.
