This happened to me once in my "old" 545i.
It was at work in the parking lot leaving work. The car started normally, I drove for ~ 10-20s, and then the AS malfunction light came on, and the steering was extremely heavy, just like when the power steering goes out. Power steering was definitely out, not just the AS. I turned off the car, restarted, and it worked again.
The dealer told me its not possible and I was dreaming....
My experience was just like yours. I promptly got rid of that vehicle without investigating the issue further. I then purchased my current vehicle without AS. BMW really needs to come clean on this potentially dangerous condition.

I just took my car in to dealer yesterdat when I got the "active steering malfunction" message 2 days ago. I was able still drive my car with no problem, feel little heavy on the steering wheel. Also the steering wheel now is tilted toward left. I will find out what happen when I get my car today. hopefully.
The sensor had to replaced. After I spoke with my friend who has 2006 530i. he had wait for month for the part.

I'm finallly bringing my car in tomorrow a.m. to have active steering re-initiated. AS has been out for a couple weeks now, but I've been able to drive the car without too much difficulty...I just hope my sensor doesn't have to be replaced?! My steering wheel is also tilted slightly off-center, towards the left. My SA indicated that I can't re-initiate the AS without some piece of equipment. I'll let you all know how it goes.
