My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
As a follow-up to my (and other) earlier posts on Active Steering Failure codes, mine went in today (next day appointment, no less) and has been diagnosed as a reprogramming issue. We'll see, but that's better than what I expected, even though under warranty. For the first month or so, it was intermittant, then it got to be faulting about 6-8 minutes after starting or restarting. Finally, this weekend, the steering offset went out by about 20 degrees, and that's when I decided to wait no longer, despite BMWNA's reading my July post and calling to personally invite me in for diagnosis. They seem to be REALLY sensitive to this issue.
I'll post a late follow-up.

Things are NOT looking good. The first two guesses were wrong, and that included re-programming. So, three days later, they are at a standstill, awaiting further new instruction from BMWNA.
Given my past false-code nightmare with this car, I am really concerned about the warranty running out in January, at only 26K. Can you imagine going through this with the clock running at $95/hour and then paying for replacement of the Active Steering system?
Scary stuff!

PS: Offered further service observations on this trip in Cobradav's BMW HDQ/ SIB nearby post. I'm running into Progman issues in spades.

I got my car back (25k miles) with a replaced control unit for the Active Steering system. This was after three days of all the electronic and programming suggestions from BMWNA.
I don't even want to know what that black box is worth; just imagine someone buying one of these things as a collector's car 30 years from now....What will still be functioning?
Now, if I can only persuade them to replace these once already-replaced Dunlop thumpflats again....

My Ride: 2010 M5 alpine white, black full leather, etc.
As I have said before, such a pain in the AS(s) caused me to dump the 545i. Frankly, I am glad I got out with a very respectable deal on the new vehicle without AS because I considered it to be a safety issue. I actually way prefer the handling of the vehicle without it. Sorry you have had such a souring experience, Ray. BMWNA may be taking your concerns very seriously, but they sure as heck are not taking it seriously enough to make a it recall issue, which it should be.
