Get the active steering. Its an absolute must. We recently got a 325 coupe for my mum and I am kicking my self in the head for not taking the AS option. It makes the car feel so much nimbler. The standard setup on the E92 is ultra heavy, its a real effort driving the car. Dont listen to the car mag articles, every non-AS car I drive now feels like a big ship!

I recently drove a 535d MSport with lower profile tyres and without Active Steering.

I enjoyed that setup with normal power steering much more.

I recommend Active Steering from the safety aspect

* AFS can intervene in an instant to provide a correction if the rear end starts to break away.
* AFS works with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to prevent a skid. When the yaw sensors detect an oversteer situation (the back end beginning to step out), it clicks in a few degrees of opposite lock.
rather than yet another (yawn) version of power steering

* AFS actually changes the steering ratio (the number of turns of the steering wheel required to turn the road wheels from lock to lock) while you drive.
* AFS is different [than] to variable assist power steering, which only varies the amount of effort, not the actual steering ratio.

I'll ley upi all know what I think after I drive the 750. I'm more concerned about steering feel (precision + feedback) than I am about the other "stuff" it can do (not that safety isn't important). If the Active Steering loses the contact with the road, I'll skip it.

Dear ABC,

You could list in your sign the wheels and tyres you have.
As we know, they do make a heck of an differance how the E60 rides.

What do you mean with "I recommend Active Steering from the safety aspect"?

The test drive I did with a E60 with AS didn't improve at all.
A lady steering was my impression.

Indeed. I too said I didn't really find the "power steering" variant particularly "good".

Still...

What do you mean with
"I recommend Active Steering from the safety aspect"?

PS. Why be ashamed of stock wheels and tyres?

I regard the integration with DSC and its ability to correct steering (to an extent) if the back end breaks away as a good insurance policy.

No you don't. The AS sucks.

I wish I would have opted for AS...there wasn't a lot of news though when I ordered my car. Without it 550i to me takes too much input at low speed to turn. At high speed, steering is great without it and may be just as good with it.

A question for owners:

The auto magazines don't seem to like Active Steering, but I haven't found any reviews on Dynamic Drive. Has anyone purchased/leased their 535/550 with both of these options? I'm stuck between a 535 and 550. The 535 xi seems a bit more nimble, but I don't like the ride (too harsh), so I tried a 550. I like the car, but I'm wondering if Dynamic Drive will make it handle a bit better. The 550's ride is perfect for me (with M Sport package), so I'd hate to ruin it with Dynamic Drive (if it doesn't provide equal ride quality with improved handling). I'm also looking for feed back on the Active Steering option. Is the "on center" feel as good as with the standard steering? Is there anything you don't like about it?

Thank you for your replies,

grover
I Have 530D m sport wit AS, absolutey brill.
