I am considering Active Cruise Control for my refreshed 08 5 er. I assume that this is not a common option. How do you users like it? What is the closest distance that you can set it? Will it work in heavy traffic?

I'm interested in getting some current answers to this question too (I'm going through the same process as pharding is right now.)
Here's some of the other threads on this subject in case it helps:

ACC leaves the minimum legal distance by German law, or more.
When you chose the minimum yoou have half the speedo in metres.
That is:
100 Km/h speed = 50 metres distance.
The other settings leave +1, +2, +3 seconds reaction time on top of it.

Ouch Iceman
That sure would not work on the East River Drive in Manhattan - 10 feet @ 30 MPH (3 M @ 48 KPH) is the norm the I have observed! But then New Yawkers are different!
It's probably just as well - I wouldn't want our lawyers to get involved.

I have Active Cruise.
It is a neat feature, but I wouldn't push for people to get it because of the high price.
The minimum follow distance is about 1 second. However, in traffic the minimum distance leaves enough room that people behind you will pass you and then cut you off.
