My Ride: BMW 520d SE, Jaguar X-Type 2.0d SE,
Land Rover Freelaner 2.5 V6
Just spent a few days in Cornwall (Padstow and St.Ives) and clocked just over 750 miles in my 520d
I used cruise control quite a lot and drove between 70-80mph on the motorway but also lots of slow high rev driving around narrow steep country lanes including the terraces in St.Ives
Checked the OBC on arrival home and was pleased to see a average fuel consumption of 50.4mpg, pretty pleased myself
It was my first long journey in the 5 and she has only clocked 3000 miles total but I found it very comfortable and time flew by with a little help from the shuffle function on my ipod

Just a reminder to some readers, UK mpg is not the same as US mpg. (50.4 would make about 40 US...which is still incredibly impressive)

Thanks for clearing that up..I was thinking to myself that MPG beats most Hybrids out there in the US. 40 MPG is impressive.
Also remember that diesel has a higher calorific value than petrol so it HAD BETTER go further per gallon!

All hail the Diesel!
Start adding cc and turbos - usual impact on consumption (though the better calorific value of Diesel fuel helps consumption compared to like for like petrol engine capacity/number of turbos).
The major Diesel driving experience is the low down torque and cruising revs. 2000 revs @ 90mph in my 535d.

Same applies as any car. Remember this is a 2-litre normally aspirated engine.
