My Ride: 2005 545i Sport, Premium, Logic 7, Jet Black, Black Leather, M-Aero Kit, 15% (very dark) Tint, Eichbach Lowering Springs, Red Brake Calipers, Radenergie R-10's, Michelin PilotSport2 in 245/35/20 and 285/30/20, Rolled Fenders, and a nifty Graco Baby Car Seat. Next Up: Xenon fogs, Eisemann Exhaust, iPod Interface, Comfort Seats.

It seems the new 550i is closing the gap against the M5 in many ways. Of course it's NOT an M5 by any stretch, in terms of straightline acceleration, handling, etc. I certainly know that.

My question is: how much of a difference is there? My wife is about to get a new 550i, and I wanted her to get a 1 year old M5 with 5k miles for the same price.

Well the newer one's (I actually saw 2 today) have the full M-Tech kit and new wheel, which I think look amazing. So other than engine, side grilles, brakes, transmission, wheels, seats, and some other minor stuff it is basically the same.

i think the 550 is missing 2 pistons compared to the m5 lol! the 2 are like chalk and cheese its like comparing a e46 330 to a m3 the 330 is nice and refined and m3 is in a different leauge a bit of an animal. Pesonally i couldnt live with a m5 as a daily car its just to raw for me I have had a m3 and 330 and living in london the 330 was IMO a nice car to own. If your out in the country with lots of b roads etc etc then it would be the m3 hands down if i was in your shoes id get 550 its by no means a m5 but then again its not a slow car either lots of power without the ball ache of running a m powered car

M5 is a different animal all together. I'd know...550i is much more practical, so that's the main reason I swapped out the M5 for the 550i. But I do miss the beast on a daily basis.

so true, i spent the past 3 1/2 years in my 645ci and now have the M6beast...even though everything sort of looks the same, they are night and day in every way, and I would never thought it possible....this is the same way M redesigned 5 to make the M5, everything looks the same until you get behind the wheel...then its like its a completely different model with no comparisons except for angles and sight lines...the M5 and M6 are racecars that appear as streetcars, plain and simple, if you have the choice and you want a race car that looks like a sports sedan, get the M5, if you want great power and luxury, but do not want to drive a race car every day, then get the 550, both are great for their respective purposes

If you got the cash to play then I say go for it. Be a pretty bad ass ride for the wife.

Won't surpise me if your 911 is more civil or as civil as a daily driver compared to M5. So if she doesn't mind buzzing around in the 911 then the M5 should be fun for her. Just be prepared for her laughing at your little 6 with her big 10.
