Its not 0 to 60... how about high way passing?
Come on man-quite honestly I have never had a problem of passing someone in a couple seconds in a 530. Assuming your not trying to pass someone doing 90-people doing 75ish I tend to pass all the time and usually if your passing you are doing more than them so its a matter of exiting your lane-pressing the pedal and your past them before the pedal is slammed.

I cant see someone getting a 550 to decrease highway passing by a second-maybe in germany but not here in the states.

OK, you are changing what you said, if 535 sport and 550 sport were the same price, you would buy the 535. Does not make sense.
You do not seem to be a BMW fan or aficionado, you are probably new to the brand. You do not seem to trust BMW, you believe they are ripping you off by charging $8500 more for the 550. But you know what? They know what they are doing, and if you choose to believe what a cheap magazine like CD says, then go ahead.

The only thing I can say to you is, drive both cars and be impartial, the only logical explanation for someone choosing a 535 sport ver a 550 sport is price, why is that so hard to admit? I choose 550 over M5 because I can not afford an M5 and I am not making lame excuses that the 550 is better, who are you kidding?
You are so clueless...

First of all in my original post I said "same options." I had to clarify what "same options" meant in my second post because you either didn't understand what "same options" means or you simply didn't read it clearly enough. So I didn't change anything.

New to the brand? I have had my E46 330i since I bought it new in 2001.

550i versus 535-copy_of_dscn2090.jpg

I track my car regularly (Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, Willow Springs etc.), I have over 10K in mods, I work on my car myself (breaks, oil changes) but nothing too complicated. My father is probably on his 6th BMW currently has an E39 M5, my mom is probably on her 6th BMW as well, currently drives an E60 545. I have subscribed to Roundel since 2001 and I am a member of the LA chapter of BMWCCA for teh pat 6 years. I participate in a group called So Cal Tech Sessions, were we all get together and work on our BMWs or go on "spirited" drives through Malibu Cyn or Death Valley. So no... I am not new to the brand.

I feel like they are ripping me off? What the heck are you talking about? Forget about money, because you seem to be hung up about that. The 535 with the chip is going to be significantly faster than the 550. That is a fact. The I6TT has repeatedly dynoed so that it is clear that it was underrated by BMW by about 20HP. Chipped 335s are running 0-60 times in the low to mid 4s. Stock 335s are taking down E46 M3s. The N52 engine just won engine of the year.

So what have we learned... In the hypothetical that I proposed I said that if teh cars were the same except for the engine, I would pick the N52. Why? It can be easily moded to be much faster than a v8 550 and would handle better based on weight savings. Argue that point and stop assuming and accusing.

[. Plus, the lease rates are so much better on the 550, that it makes more financial sense to just get the 550.
Significantly better rates on 550? You have your story reversed, the 535 has higher residual than the 550 (1% higher) and MF is identical. You have no clue, do you?
If I were to add the 172M wheels, and the aero kit (not even currently possible) to teh 535, it would be cheaper for me to just get the 550.

Do I have to spell everything for you?

Then why would you want a 550 or even a 535?? for 0 to 60? You kidding right? there would be less use for that here in the states... its passing power thats more useful... moving acceleration... be passing or coming off a on ramp or what not... be able to power out.

Thats what I mainly use my power for... be able to pass idiots as fast as i can... I dont want to have to be next to them any longer than I need to be. Plus I like the extra reserved power when needed.

and one thing... I am not arguing for a 550 over a 535 or vice versa... if I had to buy now it would be TOUGH!!!! Although I might lean towards a 535... because of the price, if I were to leave it stock... but I hate the stock bumper even the LCI bumper... I would need to set aside money for the M-Tech front and depending on how much better the 550 sport package is compared to the 535 it would prob be the deciding factor.

Okay, cader and italia535i you both have valid points why each of you are going to get what you're getting. Please let's just drop it. It's getting a little too personal. Your arguments are not going to sway someone to switch from the 550i to 535i or visa versa. Most people know already what they want.

This thread reminds me of this classic thread "545 vs 535d" from last year. 23 pages long!

Man 550 owners are sensitive when someone suggest the 535 may be faster and more agile, whether is or isn't. If you were so concerned about getting a fast 0-60 time why wouldn't you just buy a smaller, lightweight car. 5 series is people mover, not a track car. You guys must go through tanks of gas quick.

That was what I was thinking-although I love the look of the 5-I have NEVER seen an e60 driven-no I takei t bakc-one older dude had some fun and ran with me in a 550 but have never seen a 550 or any e60 actually drive at all indicitive of pushing the car-so not sure what most of the people here do with their 550s-but that was a thread I started so will not be redundant

Unfortunately too many people are mesmerized by the 0 - 60 times. The best indicator of a cars performance is from a highway roll. Highway rolls eliminate a lot of driver error and displays the true performance of the car. I, as well as few others in Socal, were enchanted by 0 - 60 and quarter miles times initially but after being convinced by heezy545i that highway rolls were the best barometer of a car's performance, that is all I've been doing these days which are now few and far in-between.
